Thanks!!! This worked instantly for me as well. I struggled with this problem after a company upgrade and did not know what happened. I had to close IE to do this as it was using the file, nevertheless, IT WORKED!! THX.

@Winston - I think he meant he tried changing it for a application under a Web Site, but changing it on the Web Site is what actually fixed it. So if you have multiple Web Sites on your IIS server, right-click the web site in question and follow the above steps.

Linda - The error you are getting is different than the one in the original post. I have seen that one before, I will try searching through my knowledge base.

I am having a similar problem but the resolution noted did not resolve my issue.

Using Sharepoint Server 2007, there is a shared Excel file on our PMO Website which I need to update. All permissions are appropriate and others in my organization have updated this file. However, when I click on the document, it does not open Excel - just opens it in the same Window. If I click on the library menu for this document and try to "Edit in Microsoft Office Excel" - I receive the following error:

['Edit Document' requires a Windows SharePoint Services-compatible application and Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or greater.]

Internet Explorer is v7.0 and I have Microsoft Office XP Professional installed with all the latest patches.

Anyone have an idea on this one?

If you have MS Office 2003 and other MS 2007 applications installed, copy owssupp.dll from the OFFICE11 to the OFFICE12 directory.

This Worked Perfectly!!! Thank you for the time saving info!!! I never would have guessed to rename the "SMS" file in:
C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Microsoft\MMC\SMS
